ABOUT US
The Merrillville History Museum opened its doors in 1996. Prior to the current location, many of the items now on exhibit at the museum were displayed at Wood's Historic Grist Mill in the Deep River County Park.
In the early 1990's, when the Merrillville town government moved its offices from old town hall/primary school to 78th & Broadway, the historical society was offered the use of the building to house a museum. Through generous donations and many years of work, the building was been transformed into today's museum filled with artifacts, historical photographs and other treasures that tell the story of the area.
The museum is operated by members of the Ross Township Historical Society, a non-profit organization founded on July 1, 1967. Former Merrillville teacher Paul Tully brought together a group of area residents who were interested in preserving local history, heritage and legacy.
Today the group remains dedicated to the same causes and strives to serve the growing community at large. Our founding principles remain the same:

- To collect and preserve the history of Merrillville and Ross Township: historic landmarks, artifacts and articles of the early inhabitants, including Native Americans, pioneers and other settlers.
- To stimulate public interest and pride in Merrillville's and Ross Township's past, present and future.
- To promote a lasting tribute to the founders and developers of Merrillville and Ross Township as well as establishing a cultural attraction for the community.
