HISTORIC DISTRICT COMING
Early in 2014, the Merrillville Town Council created an Historic Preservation Commission to assistant and advise the establishment of an Historical District along 73rd Avenue.
The Historical District would stretch along 73rd Avenue, from Van Buren to Mississippi Street and include a mix of residential, commercial, open space and institutional use. The vision for the corridor is to create a historic district with opportunities for redevelopment in some of the open spaces, streetscaping, markers highlighting historical signs points, and redeveloping some historic buildings.
Historic Preservation Commission's purpose includes promoting the viability of the downtown/Old Lincolnway area and enhancing tourism within the town; encouraging harmonious and orderly growth and development; promoting maintenance of established commercial and residential neighborhoods whose distinctiveness is in danger; and preserving the historical and harmonious appearance of the structures.
The commission has seven members. Dorinda Gregor and Alice Smedstad, two members from the Merrillville Historical Society are members of the new commission.
